Healing Hearts, Changing Lives:
A Vision for Addiction Recovery and Transformation
Welcome to a transformative journey where brokenness becomes the foundation for healing others. As a Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist specializing in addiction recovery, I've witnessed firsthand how the most wounded healers often become the most effective agents of change. Today, I invite you to join our mission of combining evidence-based therapeutic approaches with faith-based recovery to create lasting transformation in the lives of those struggling with addiction.
Through our two 501(c)(3) organizations—Hope2Heal, Inc. and Global Restorers Of the Breach Ministries—we are pioneering a unique approach that recognizes Betrayal and/or Addiction as a pathway to profound healing and discipleship. Our vision is to transform the difficult experiences of addiction into wisdom that empowers elite recovery leaders who will change their communities.

When Brokenness Becomes a Blessing
The Paradox of Betrayal
The cornerstone of our ministry emerges from a powerful revelation: betrayal is not just an experience to survive, but a blessing that prepares us to heal others. Just as Christ's betrayal ushered in our redemption, the personal betrayals and struggles of addiction become the very pathway through which transformation flows.
In the past 41 years as a Professional Therapist, I've listened to countless stories of betrayal—families torn apart, trust broken, and lives seemingly destroyed by addiction. Yet these same stories often become testimonies of extraordinary healing when properly processed and reframed.
"What the devil meant for evil as a means to destroy us is the very thing God will use to usher us into the Divine Destiny He Has For Us."
Betrayal
The painful experience of betrayal through addiction or marital infidelity creates a profound soul wound
Transformation
Processing pain through CBT, MI, and faith leads to perspective shifts
Healing
Wounds become wisdom as recovery progresses
Service
Healed individuals become uniquely equipped to help others
This profound truth has shaped our approach to recovery ministry—we don't just seek to deliver people from addiction; we help them discover how their painful experiences have uniquely prepared them to become agents of healing in others' lives.
Hey guys – Steve Sweeney here!
The video below is from one of the most difficult seasons of my life—during my strokes in 2019.
The first stroke hit in April while I was living in Thailand, where I had been for a year and a half. I had sold everything I owned before moving there in December 2017—everything except the vision and business the Lord gave me back in 2005.
I returned to the U.S. in July 2019 with nothing but that calling. I moved in with my mother, still recovering from stroke #1, my right hand paralyzed, trying to figure out what came next.
Then, just three months later—in September—I suffered a second stroke.
That one nearly broke me. I honestly didn’t think I’d make it back.
But God did.
By His Grace alone, He had other Plans. And guess what? You’re part of that Plan.
I may not know exactly how I’m meant to help you, but I know I’ve been sent for a reason. Maybe my story, my scars, and this video serve as a visual reminder of what’s possible. I hope we can use our testimonies—not just mine, but yours too—to help others find hope and healing.
Let’s keep walking this road together.

The Empty House Problem: Why Deliverance Without Discipleship Fails
Jesus offers a sobering warning in Matthew 12:43-45 about the danger of spiritual vacancy. When an unclean spirit is cast out but nothing fills its place, it returns with "seven other spirits more wicked than himself." This powerful metaphor perfectly illustrates why so many recovery programs fail.
The Relapse Cycle Explained
In my years working with the criminal justice system's Diversion programs, I've observed this cycle repeatedly. Individuals experience a moment of breakthrough—perhaps through a court intervention, a spiritual experience, or a health crisis—but without proper discipleship and cognitive restructuring, they remain vulnerable.
1
Momentary Deliverance
The initial freedom from addiction feels like a clean sweep
2
The Dangerous Void
Without new thought patterns and spiritual disciplines, emptiness remains
3
Greater Vulnerability
The return to old patterns often leads to deeper addiction than before
This insight has revolutionized our approach. Rather than focusing solely on getting people clean, we emphasize building a sustainable recovery lifestyle through discipleship. Our programs don't just address the "what" of addiction but the "why"—transforming thoughts and beliefs that fuel destructive behaviors.
Our Integrated Approach: Where Clinical Excellence Meets Spiritual Transformation
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Our CBT approach helps participants identify and challenge destructive thought patterns that fuel addiction. By recognizing the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, individuals learn to interrupt negative cycles before they lead to relapse.
Motivational Interviewing
Through empathetic questioning and reflective listening, we help individuals discover their own intrinsic motivation for change. This client-centered approach respects autonomy while gently guiding toward positive transformation.
Interactive Journaling
Our structured journaling process provides a safe space for self-reflection and growth. By processing experiences through writing, participants gain clarity about their past and vision for their future, connecting their story to God's redemptive narrative.
Readiness Assessment: The Key to Sustainable Recovery
Before rushing to pray for instant breakthrough, we assess:
  • Is this person committed to the growth process?
  • Do they have accountability structures and community support?
  • Do they understand that spiritual warfare intensifies after initial freedom?
This readiness-focused approach ensures we're not simply delivering people into greater vulnerability, but preparing them for sustainable transformation. As Jesus taught, counting the cost before building the tower prevents tragic collapse (Luke 14:28-30).
Discipleship: The Missing Link in Recovery
Our approach centers on a truth often overlooked in recovery programs: deliverance is only the doorway, discipleship is the path. Without structured spiritual growth and cognitive renewal, freedom remains fragile.
The Discipleship Difference
Romans 12:2 instructs us to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind." This biblical principle aligns perfectly with cognitive behavioral therapy's emphasis on thought transformation. Our discipleship program integrates:
Biblical Foundation
Scriptural truths that counter addiction's lies
Authentic Community
Accountability relationships that provide support and challenge
Spiritual Disciplines
Prayer, study, and service that strengthen recovery muscles
Identity Transformation
Shifting from "recovering addict" to "new creation"
Through our structured discipleship program, we've witnessed remarkable transformation in individuals who previously cycled through multiple treatment attempts. The difference? They're not just abstaining from substances—they're building a new life founded on renewed thinking and spiritual growth.
As one participant testified: "For the first time, I'm not just trying to stay clean. I'm becoming someone new, with purpose and hope. My past isn't just something to escape—it's becoming my testimony."
Redeeming the Addict's Strength: From Weakness to Weapon
Leadership
Former addicts often possess natural charisma and influence skills that, when redeemed, make them powerful ministry leaders
Empathy
The pain of addiction creates profound empathy for others' struggles, enabling authentic connection with those still suffering
Resilience
Surviving addiction builds tenacity and perseverance that becomes spiritual stamina in recovery
Resourcefulness & Entrepreneurship
The survival skills developed during addiction become problem-solving abilities in ministry
"God makes your weakness your weapon." — inspired by 2 Corinthians 12:9
Case Study: From Dealer to Healer
One of our most powerful testimonies involves a former drug dealer who now leads our outreach to individuals still trapped in addiction. The same streets where he once sold destruction now witness his ministry of hope. His understanding of the dealer mindset gives him unique credibility and insight.
His journey illustrates a core principle of our ministry: the very traits that made someone "successful" in addiction—persuasiveness, risk-taking, adaptability—become powerful assets when redirected toward Kingdom purposes.
Through intentional discipleship, we help individuals identify their God-given strengths that were previously misdirected. This strength-based approach transforms shame into purpose, helping them see themselves not just as "former addicts" but as warriors equipped for spiritual battle.

"I’ve made so many bad life decisions. I’ve hurt people knowingly and mistakenly. I’ve done bad things with good intentions. I say this because I am human. I don’t pretend to have the answers. I have my own challenges that I battle everyday. But, despite my many shortcomings, I’ve still managed to get really good at this one thing . . . and I’d like to share it with you."  I can teach you how to Adapt, Overcome and Thrive, using the circumstances of your trauma  and desperation as momentum for the rewarding journey ahead.   I don’t know who you are (yes, you, the one reading this), but thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for allowing me to do work I find meaningful. "
Adapted from Alex Hormozi
When I read what Alex wrote, I was blown away because his words really captured the sentiment of my purpose in life. I'm a stroke survivor, (two strokes within five months of each other in 2019) and I have a life long history of Substance Abuse, ADD mixed together with a prideful/haughty spirit - but God used those laboratory conditions to prepare me to help you!

Only A Lion Understands A Lion
This core principle guides Steve Sweeney's unique approach. Having navigated profound personal struggles, he recognized the void of competent professionals who could truly relate to his journey.
"The difference between a teacher and a mentor is that a teacher learned the concepts they are teaching from a course, whereas a mentor carries breakthroughs and authority because they have gone through what they are teaching."
Steve's own battles with Substance Abuse and Trauma forged a deep understanding and unique authority. This is why his clients don't just receive instruction; they gain a mentor who has walked the path before them.
